Springtime and summertime to a golfer, means lush fairways and faster greens. Or, if you're like me, thicker rough. Luckily, there's plenty of golfing opportunity throughout north Mississippi.
Most every golfer enjoys casual rounds with friends; however, tournament play presents more of a challenge. For the ones that want a little skin in the game, not to mention it's for a good cause, I encourage them to consider the Oxford-University Bank 2-man scramble in Oxford, Miss., scheduled for June 24-25. Taking place at the Ole Miss Golf Course, it's a fun, competitive tournament featuring a best ball format. So, even if you get a case of the laterals, the hosel rockets, the "S-words"(no, I'm not going to type it), you have a partner to bail you out. Or, simply put your change in your left pocket, tie your left shoe in a double knot, turn your hat around backwards and put your tee behind your left ear. Hey, if it worked for Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy it will work for you.
This tournament benefits the LOU (Lafayette-Oxford-University) Ole Miss Club scholarship endowment. With the help of this tournament, the scholarship endowment will reach the $115,000 mark this year. The scholarships are awarded annually to a graduating senior from both Oxford and Lafayette High Schools attending the University of Mississippi. Scholarship selection is based upon academic achievements, financial need, and leadership qualities.
LOU president Gant Boone on the impact the tournament is having, "This tournament has really been a great source of income for the scholarship endowment. We are only in year four and have seen the scholarship amount for each student grow from $250 to $1000. Our goal is to continue to grow the endowment and provide opportunities for local students."
I hope to see you on the course come June. Tee times are filling up so reserve your spot. For more information please visit our Facebook page, LOU Ole Miss Club (@LOUolemissalumniclub). For registration, please visit our website, olemissalumni.com/events.
